Just a quick reminder to all our class members that there are no lessons this week, but we will be starting a brand new term of Collegiate Shag classes the following week on Thursday 23rd February in our usual Redbrook near Monmouth base. Thank you so much for supporting us again this year, you guys are really cuttin' a rug.

If you've been thinking of coming along to one of our lessons then the 23rd of February is the time to start. Click on on our flyer over there on the left for further details. It would be great to see you there.

Blues swing for Macmillan - Saturday 24th March

Some friends from Ross Swing n Jive are organising a dance in Hereford to raise funds for Macmillan nurses.

The C Jam Blue band are playing, they are very bluesy.

We are running one-off afternoon sessions with a limited number of dancers to offer what will be basically a small group private lesson. The main aim of the sessions is to improve your dancing through style - lead & follow - concept - improvisation etc and generally to improve your understanding of the dance: It is not necessarily about new moves, though you may well pick up a few new things along the way.

You will book in with a partner - one leader + one follower and there is the option to stick with your partner all afternoon if you wish. We will be happy to dance with anyone during the afternoon if you feel that you would benefit from it - again this is not imperative.

Not imperative by any means, but for those interested there will be the chance to be filmed and to watch and discuss the videos as one of the best possible learning aids

Festival SWING ART du 22 au 26 février 2012 in Bordeaux (France)

The association "Swing Time" organises the 5th edition of the Swing Art Festival in Bordeaux from the 22nd to the 26th of February.

This 5th edition will offer swing dance classes (lindy hop and thematic workshops) with Dax & Sarah, Juan & Sharon, Thomas & Alice and Angela Andrew "Cookie".

What's more, we propose a " lindy exchange" for those who would like to enjoy tourism in Bordeaux neighbourhoods with an "off" festival (free): swing evenings (big bands), introduction classes to swing dances and others at the root of swing (african dance, capoeira, modern jazz, hip hip...), street activities, flea market, old cars parade, wine tasting.

Accommodation at dancers' and volunteers' places is possible.

Dear readers of the Bristol Swing Dancers blog,

It has been suggested that a forum be set up, with a little more structure than the Facebook Group where a lot of really useful chat currently happens (and will continue to do so) - but where the posts can disappear very quickly off the bottom.

This forum should allow more room for getting ourselves into groups that can set up practice sessions, organise socials (much as we are all mildly obsessed by dancing, it may be nice to chinwag without being interrupted every 3 minutes), go to gigs or other non-dance-specific events, and maybe even start performance groups - the sky's the limit!

As you may not be viewing posts from this blog on the page itself at http://bristolswingdancers.blogspot.com/, instead seeing them via the Facebook Page or through Twitter, you may be unfamiliar with it! This forum is now part of the blog, so please bookmark this page: http://bristolswingdancers.blogspot.com/p/forum.html

This is now very much in test-phase - at the moment ANYONE can post or reply, so you need not register, as long as you provide a recognisable name.

However the internet being what it is, if this kicks off then I suspect I'll have to lock it down to registered users only (so if you like it, register!), lay down some rules and possibly 'employ' a volunteer moderator or two. This isn't a reflection on the community, just the way these things seem to go online. Also this being a free service, ads will appear within a month from which I won't be profiting.

So finally, a few ground rules to start us off:
* Let's not swear, it's uncouth (funny euphemisms however will be welcomed).
* Be excellent to each other.
* No bad-mouthing of any events or organisers - this is a public place.

Bristol Swing Festival 6-9th April This is Bristol's biggest swing dance event of the year - an international level Lindy Hop camp with top instructors, plus taster classes in circus skills. Bristol University Dance Show - Fire on the Dancefloor

The Bristol University Dance Society are putting on their annual dance show 'FIRE ON THE DANCEFLOOR', this year it is going to be bigger and better than ever!!!

It includes many dance styles which I'm sure will interested everyone, not only will you get to see performances in your favourite styles but you can experience all that dance has to offer.

We, as UBU dance society, will be putting on performances in ballet, street, hiphop, belly, cuban, zumba, tap, jazz and contemporary. We will also have guest performances from Le roc soc, UBU ballroom and latin society and breakdance society.

The show includes over 100 dancers, so as you can see there really is something for everyone!

Hi everyone,
Welcome to dancing in 2012!

Thanks for all the feedback last year - we've reduced the price on Wednesdays for class & dancing to £6/£4, and given the option of signing up to the intermediate classes as a 4 week block which reduces the price of these although you can still atttend these as drop-ins as before. We've also added a weekly Shag class for the first 3 months.

Thanks to everyone who made the New Year weekender such a success, and we'd love to see you at April's Bristol Swing Festival which is now open for booking.

Our new class programme is now on the website and includes:
7pm Improvers 6 count moves/technique (designed to follow on from beginners course). Advance booking.
8pm Intermediate 8 count variatons. Advance booking or drop-in.
9pm Shag drop-in (3 months of Shag classes to get really confident). Drop-in.

We have two beginner courses this month, one is an 8 week course on Thursday nights starting 19th Jan, the other an intensive over 28-29th Jan where you do the whole course in one weekend. Advance booking required, full details here

Weekly dance night
Ain't Misbehavin' starts back on Weds 11th Jan. Our usual improver class at 7.30pm, plus a beginners class in the back room at 8pm. Price for dancing (includes beginners class) remains at £4/£3. Price for Improvers class now includes dancing so price for both is now £2 less at £6/£4.

After discussion with a few News Years' Swing 'N' Blues survivors last night, and with David taking a well deserved break, we will be having a night of Lindy Hop and Blues downstairs on the Grain Barge pub this Wednesday (tomorrow), 8-11pm.

If you're intending to come along please let me know so I can give them some idea of numbers (I'll be calling them again later tonight), but there will not be a guest list so if you don't know in advance you can still just turn up on the night.

The space is a good size, with two distinct areas for dancing (both in the same room), and is reserved exclusively for us. The floor is made from wooden planks, flat but a bit sticky. If someone has powder please bring it because we can use it, as long as we clear it up afterwards. Also, my Lindy Hop and Blues collection is small and limited, so if you have a good selection on your MP3 player or laptop please bring them along - we can hook them up to the existing sound system.

Venue: Downstairs @ the Grain Barge

Time: 8-11pm (the venue closes at 11pm)

Cost: £2 on the door to cover the cost of hire

Bar: Upstairs, but we can take drinks downstairs

Due to many requests we are running two improvers level Balboa classes. These are
primarily aimed at dancers who've had some experience of Balboa - however minimal.
We will assume that people at least know the basic rhythm and can keep the basic going with a partner. We will be building on the basic elements and adding some more shapes and moves to your repertoire. The two classes are designed to work together and will follow on naturally - though the classes will stand on their own.

CLASS 2 - 2.50 - 3.45   BALBOA Improvers 2
follows on naturally from class 1

CLASS 3 - 4.00 - 5.00        LINDY HOP CHARLESTON SPECIAL
A special class looking at some variations on the classic Lindy Hop Charleston moves.
We may be looking at variations on The Back Charleston - Opposite Charleston etc. so will assume that you are reasonably on top of the basic versions                          .

CLASS 4 - 5.15 - 6.15   in honour of FRANKIE MANNING - CLASS 3
We were lucky enough to have been taught by the great Frankie Manning and actually performed with him. We are holding this third class showing some more of Frankie's favourite moves and styling that we learnt directly off him. If you like Lindy - you'll love this!

I know it's hard to believe but BSF 2012 will be better than last year.

We're welcoming back some of the teachers from last year along with some new ones:

And of course, numerous professional circus performers/teachers based in Bristol.

Add in four dances rather than three, two nights with a live band rather than one, okay still one after party and tons of stunning swing/circus cabaret performances, it's an event not to be missed.

From the Gloucester Direction, travel into Cheltenham to Montpelier, go past the Queens hotel and join the one way system at the first set of traffic lights, at the end of the promenade. Go round the one way system, past the Traffic lights at the end of St George's road.

Swing Dance Cardiff aims to create a vibrant swing dance community in Cardiff, through great dance nights and fun classes, suitable for everyone.

Hey guys and girls this is going to be a fab evening. It has sold out but we still have a few requests. The aim of the evening is to raise ONE THOUSAND POUNDS for Cotswold Care Hospice at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire. Don't Forget to bring some extra cash for voting so you can back your favourite dancers.

We have a fab crew already working hard on the event but we could do with a few extras.

Some notes on Shag

Some notes and videos about collegiate shag - mostly for those who have been doing Tashi and Ian's recent Thursday night shag classes:

It's the late 1920s and jazz is evolving the rhythms that we come to know as swing, various dances that fit this new music are appearing, lindy hop in New York, balboa in Los Angeles, and shag is another rhythm that fits the swing music. Shag seems to have no home though, no-one started doing shag in the way that Shorty George started doing lindy hop, there was no moment in history. And so there's very little information on early shag or on different shag style amongst dancers. Very few videos, the best known of which are probably the worst examples of the original style. The name Collegiate Shag suggest it was done by the young college kids who were likely to be more fun than formal and some early videos support this - but Collegiate Shag as a name was only applied relatively recently (certainly post-WW2) to differentiate it from Carolina Shag, St Louis Shag, and others, no-one at the time said they were dancing 'collegiate' shag.

The class and the performance are painful to watch for style but the four couples from 3:15 are fabulous. Arthur Murray was a ballroom dance teacher who assimilated popular dance styles and took the rawness away from them to make them acceptable for a more genteel audience, and in doing so changed the original style hugely.

Wednesday 7th December is our Christmas party with the Paper Moon Band playing live, Improvers class at 7.30pm, Beginners taster class at 8pm, and why not join in with our secret santa tub - max of £2 per present and details of what's involved here.

Then later that day we'll be dancing in Cabot Circus in Bristol at 3.30pm. I don't know exactly where, so wander round til you find us.

And the following weekend, on Sunday 18th Dec we'll be back in Cardiff for some dancing in the afternoon.

Balboa Technique and Musicality Workshop and Tea Dance this Sunday Afternoon, Gloucester

Just to remind you that our final Balboa Technique and Musicality workshop will be this Sunday afternoon.

Date: Sunday 27^th November (2.30pm-5.30pm)
Venue: Gambier Parry Hall, Highnam, Gloucester, GL2 8DF
Cost: £5 for two hour workshop, including free tea, coffee and home made cakes
plus an extra hour for social dancing included in price!

ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW JAZZ AND SUPPER EVENT

It is now 14 months since A and W Jazz started its once monthly jazz evenings at it's BAWA club "concord room" venue. Over this period of time it has steadily become recognised for its efforts to bring a cross section of good quality jazz to enthusiasts in the Bristol area. The original aim of A and W was to bring to the greater Bristol area some of the great names and bands that sadly can only be seen if one is prepared and able to travel to distant venues. To this end a great deal of success has been achieved, and the venue is now beginning to attract the attention of some of the very best in the Jazz world, a good example is the confirmed booking of Digby Fairweather and his band in march 2012, and engagement enquires from The National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and The Dutch Swing College Band. Both of which are interested in visiting as part of future tours. The facilities offered by the BAWA club are excellent, and proving to be a good choice, as furt her facilities have now been made available in order to enhance the current jazz nights. The first Big Band Dance was held in the Ballroom last month and proved to be a great success both with dancers and big band enthusiasts, with over 130 attending and many asking for more to come, the next one has been arranged for 20th January 2012.

I have long been of the opinion that a good jazz venue should be able to offer a complete package to everyone, and it is noted that there is no provision for those who enjoy a quality social and jazz evening that also includes a first class supper as part of a complete night out. An ideal event to meet up with old friends, make new ones, celebrate a special occasion, or finish of a business meeting. Bristol Lindyhop Film on Weds 30th November
Earlier this year a Greek film-maker (and then one of our local dancers), Danae Mikelli, made a short film about the development of the Lindyhop scene in Bristol. The film has since premiered at a film festival in Greece and I now have permission to show it. Many of you were filmed earlier this year - in classes, at Ain't Misbehavin', during the swing picnic, at the Bristol Swing Festival - so come and see if she made ya famous ;-)

We'll show the film twice during the evening - once at 8.20pm after the class and before the dancing starts, and once much later (this may need to be at the end of the night depending on how much the sound from the main room affects the screening). Entry will be the same as normal: £8/£6 with the class, £4/£3 without, but we'll ask for a voluntary 50p donation to contribute to the running costs of the cinema.

As the film has not yet been shown publicly in the UK, this will be a private screening and we need to ask you to join the Swing Dance Bristol Film Club on the night, which is free.

Christmas party on Weds 7th December
In September The Paper Moon Band played their first dance night for us - if you were there you'll know they were fantastic, so I'm delighted to tell you that they are coming back for our Christmas Party. They've expanded their repertoire even more since last time - most will still be medium paced, but there will be a little treat or two for the speed junkies among you :-)

You'll also have the chance to buy your feet a Christmas present as we'll have a dance shoe stall from the lovely people at the Dance Locker. I've bought my last few pairs of dance shoes from them - they have a good range and I've found them cheaper than other suppliers. You can get an idea of their range and prices before then on their website below, although please note that I've asked them to bring a wide range for lindyhoppers so don't expect ballet shoes (unless you contact them in advance and ask them to bring something specific for you).

It's gonna be quite a week! The fabulously glamorous Puppini Sisters are playing the night before at Cardiff's Glee Club (have a listen to them below or see the Glee Club site for details of the evening). This was fully booked but due to a late cancellation we have space for one more couple. Aerials are the moves where one partner flies through the air. Your dance level doesn't matter too much but you should be reasonably fit. No partner rotation so it's signup with a partner only.

Collegiate Shag with Dai & Sharon

Our new term starts on Thursday 10th November and this time we’re introducing a new Improvers / Intermediate level class alongside our beginners class. This new class will be suitable for anyone confident with the basic Shag footwork and would like to build their vocabulary of Shag moves and patterns.

We’ll also be starting a brand new series of Collegiate Shag Classes for complete beginners, so if you’ve been considering learning this fantastically fun dance then now’s the time to start.

Beginners 19:30 till 20:30 and then a 15 minute practice session.

Improvers / Intermediates 20:45 till 21:45 and then a 15 minute practice session

It all happens at Redbrook Village Hall, just outside of Monmouth.

The practice sessions are an opportunity to try out what you have learned in class, with Sharon and Dai on hand to answer any questions, and offer individual tips and advice. We realise that it’s not always easy to ask questions during a class and it’s much more comfortable one to one.

Last year was an outrageous success and we raised a huge amount for Cotswold Care Hospice.

This year again there are two options here

Get practicing and be one of the competitors and enjoy a fun filled superb evening as well as a shed load of help to get your routine just dandy. Already we have a raft of lovely people who will be competing. They are currently polishing their shoes and checking stocks of glitter and sequins, getting steps in order. getting themselves ready for an evening of glitter, glamour and hair lacquer and huge fun at our Strictly Christmas Charity Ball.

This year we are looking at adding a group section so if you fancy a huge amount of fun with a gang of you then let us know. Some of you have already spoken to us so now's your chance.

Get a ticket (£12) for the evening to enjoy the double bubble of watching all the performances, (which will be about an hour) voting for your favorite couple, heckling the judges, and then enjoy the rest of a superb evening with oodles of dancing for you. Don't forget to bring your wallet as we intend to raid them unashamedly for Cotswold Care. We will be playing games and having prizes to raise money for the charity and you will enjoy the whole experience immensely.

The aim of the evening is to raise ONE THOUSAND POUNDS for Cotswold Care Hospice at Minchinhampton in Gloucestershire and even better to beat last year's amount of money raised.

A Raffle : We are looking for things to raffle. Got a Gin Palace, a Ferrari or race horse you can spare then please let us know!
